NCAA Tournament: Day 1 Highlights

Yesterday marked the start of everyone slacking off at work and school. It is the time of the year when everyone becomes a college basketball fan. The time of the year when that cinderella team makes a run deep into the tournament and ruins millions of brackets.

The biggest story of the "second round" was Harvard upsetting New Mexico to get their first tournament win in school history. Third-seeded New Mexico was heavily favored and picked by many to make a run in this years tournament, but failed to get out of the round of 64 for the second straight year. Harvard led and controlled much of the game, making New Mexico force tough shots. Wesley Saunders led Harvard with 18 points and four rebounds in 39 minutes. Harvard will try to be this years cinderella team and will face sixth-seeded Arizona on Saturday.

Another big surprise was the success of the Pac-12 Conference. Arizona, Oregon, and California all won their games yesterday to advance to the next round. Oregon, powered by Damyean Dotson and Arsalan Kazemi, defeated Oklahoma State convincingly 68-55. Arizona proved the critics wrong and shut down popular upset pick Belmont. California upset UNLV 64-61in a game that ended with multiple missed free throws by both teams.

VCU and Syracuse looked like championship caliber teams in their opening games. VCU beat 12th-seeded Akron by 46. The Rams forced 21 turnovers and only allowed Akron to make one shot from beyond the arc. Syracuse dominated Montana 81-34 to continue their momentum that they gained from a successful Big East Tournament. They will face California in the next round on Saturday.

One thing that many people forget while watching the tournament is that these players are only college kids. Some of them are playing in the last game of their career. Pittsburgh guard Tray Woodall reminded us of that yesterday in his emotional post game press conference. See video below.

Nate Robinson's HUGE dunk vs. Portland (video)

With the NCCA Tournament kicking off yesterday, Nate Robinson did his best to direct the attention back to the NBA for a moment. The 5'9" guard split the Portland defense with a nifty move and absolutely threw the ball down with authority. Chicago ended up losing the game, but Robinson provided us with the spectacular highlight.

Miami wins 23rd straight; LeBron steals the show (video)

The Miami Heat escaped by the Boston Celtics on Monday night to win their 23rd consecutive game. Miami now owns the second longest winning streak in NBA history, after Lebron James hit what proved to be the game winner in the closing seconds of the game. James finished the game with 37 points, 12 assists, and seven rebounds. Jeff Green led the Celtics and all scorers with a surprising 43 points, a career-high.

Miami's win streak may not have been the biggest story of the game. In the second quarter, LeBron caught an alley-oop from Norris Cole and for some reason Jason Terry thought it would be a good idea to try and block the dunk. LeBron almost jumped over Terry and completely embarrassed him. He even took it as far as to stand over Terry while he laid helpless on the ground.

The Heat will try for 24 straight wins Wednesday night when they visit the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Temple University: St. Patty's Weekend Review

If you go to Temple University, you know that St. Patrick’s Day is always going to be a good time no matter what day the holiday falls on. This year, St. Patty’s Day happened to fall on the last Sunday of Temple’s spring break, meaning that the students would have to go to class the next day. That didn’t seem to matter, as people woke up, dressed like idiots, and prepared themselves for a long day of drinking.

The weekend started with some disappointing news, as Temple’s men’s basketball team lost to Massachusetts Friday night 79-74 in the A-1O Tournament.  However, Temple received some good news on Selection Sunday when they found out that they made the NCAA Tournament as a number nine seed. The team is set to play eight-seeded NC State on Friday at 1:40 PM.

On Saturday, it seemed like student’s were slowly returning to campus, but many students were still at home for break. Some people started the celebration a day early, walking or stumbling around campus dressed in all green. The weather was not exactly ideal, as it was snowing and sleeting for much of the day.

Sunday was absolutely crazy. TUrnt-UP was at a party on Edgley Street that ended up getting three kegs. The music was blasting outside and the back yard was crowded with people playing beer pong. Many schools just began spring break, so a lot of people came up to join in on the celebration and they were definitely glad that they did.

One of the most memorable moments of the weekend was when a kid pooped in his pants while attempting a keg stand. Yes, you read that correctly…someone pooped in his pants while doing a keg stand.

The house got absolutely trashed. The floor was covered in a coating of beer and mud. There was trash everywhere and the couch in the living room got destroyed. The basement had glass bottles shattered all over the floor because people were shooting hockey pucks at them. At one point the sink broke and was spraying water all over the kitchen. People were up drinking till six in the morning, despite having class the next day.

Overall, St. Patty’s day at Temple was a success and an awesome way to end spring break. If you missed out on the festivities, be sure to come up next year, you won’t regret it.

Chris Mason...where you at? (video)

Last night, the Vancouver Canucks and Nashville Predators game went into a shootout. With the Canucks already leading 5-4, Henrik Sedin added another goal on a nifty move against Nashville goalie Chris Mason. Not only did he beat Mason, he made him look like an absolute fool. (See video below).

Hilarious Jeff Gordon Pepsi MAX Commercial (video)

There has been a lot of buzz over the internet about a recent Pepsi MAX commercial featuring veteran NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon. The commercial has Gordon dress up like an everyday person going to a Chevy dealership to test drive a car. Pepsi put cameras in and outside of the car to get the reaction of the salesperson. Some people are saying that it is fake, but it is still awesome. We'll let you decide.

The Evolution of Thursday

Thursday. It was once known as the day before Friday. The day before the start of the weekend. The only good thing about Thursday was the fact that Thanksgiving always comes on the fourth Thursday of November and you are guaranteed to inhale a delicious meal.

Today, Thursday has a new meaning. "Thirsty Thursday". For college students, Thursday now marks the start of the weekend. Thursday means that you are going to get nothing done on Friday because you drank your face off the night before. It makes the school week go faster and the weekend come sooner. If your not going out Thursday night for whatever reason, people look at you funny.

Not only does Thursday now mean the weekend is starting, it means that you are in for the best day for social media of the week. "Throwback Thursday". Twitter and Instagram are taken over by people posting old or "throwback" pictures of themselves or other things. It gives people the opportunity to reminisce on old memories or forgotten childhood hobbies.

Below, TUrnt-UP takes a look at some of our favorite "throwbacks" of the 90's.

TV Show: Rugrats
If you grew up in the 90's and considered yourself to be a Nickelodeon kid, then you most likely watched Rugrats.

Song: TLC - "No Scrubs"
"No Scrubs" was the ideal R&B song of the 90's. Girls were able to jam out in their room to this song after a breakup with a guy. Guys listened to this song because it was just flat out catchy.

Movie: The Shawshank Redemption
Arguably the best movie ever made. Enough said. If you haven't seen it, do it now.

Athlete: Deion Sanders
"Primetime" was one of the most feared defensive backs in the NFL in the 90's. Whether he was running one back for a touchdown, or dressing like a complete fool, Deion definitely knew how to get the media's attention.

Temple University: things you should know

Temple University is one of the best schools in Pennsylvania, but before you apply or come up to visit a friend, here are a few things that you should know about the campus.

Sirens. They will be your alarm clock in the morning, and your lullaby to fall asleep at night.

If you drive a car and live off-campus, do not leave anything remotely valuable showing because you will probably come back to your car hung-over after a long night of drinking to find that your window has been smashed.

Do not let the Temple security guards fool you. These guys do absolutely nothing except ride bikes around looking like they are training for the Tour de France. If you’re a girl walking to a party on the weekend, there is a good chance they will hit on you instead of looking out for your safety. If you drunkenly stumble by them, they will either laugh at you or help you get to your destination.

Campus Wi-Fi could potentially be the reason that you throw your computer out the window. It sucks. You might spend half of your class trying to connect, and when you finally do, your professor will probably tell you to put your computer away.

Avoid walking down Montgomery at all costs when it is cold. It may seem like it is a nice day with a slight breeze, but then you turn down Montgomery and that slight breeze turns into a tornado and you now feel like your living in the Alaskan wilderness.

Finals week? The library will be filled with more Asians than usual. Going to the tech might be worth it, but only if you enjoy walking around for hours trying to find a computer.

Thanksgiving break does not exist. You will have class the day before Thanksgiving and your professor will not cancel that class.

That loud bang you heard out your window when your trying to sleep at night was a gunshot. If sirens followed that loud bang you heard, it was definitely a gunshot.

Montgomery Beer Distributor delivers cases to your house. This is clutch. Very clutch.

Sunday night into Monday is trash day. Trash day means two things. First, it means that the bums will be rustling through your recyclables trying to collect every last beer can so they can get paid. Second, it means that when you are walking to class on Monday, the city of Philadelphia will somehow manage to smell even worse than it already does.

It is not unusual to be standing inches from a squirrel. Some people feed the squirrels.

Yes, there is two feet of snow on the ground. No, classes are not canceled and your mid-term is still due.

Wednesdays are the only days that you should go to the Draught Horse. They have $1 Bud Lites from 9-12 and the place actually gets crowded. Don’t try to get in with a fake ID, use someone’s real one. If you have a fake ID, go to Maxi’s.

Spring Fling will be held on a weekday. Temple supports students going to class drunk or not going to class at all.

Temple art students go to Tyler, not Temple. The Tyler School of Art was once a separate institution, but is now part of Temple. Don’t bother arguing with them about it just let them be.

The bums like to hang out in various spots around campus. Rite Aid is definitely one of the most popular hangouts. When they ask you for money, keep walking and say that you only have a card. If it is getting close to the holidays, you might find it hard to walk away while they are begging you for money so that they can buy their kids Christmas presents. It is highly unlikely that they are going to buy their kids any presents, as there is a store that sells malt liquor right across the street.

Throwback Thursday: Hank Aaron

In honor of throwback Thursday, TUrnt-UP takes a look back at this day in sports. Hank Aaron is most commonly known for hitting 755 home runs during his MLB career. He was known as the home run king before being eclipsed by Barry Bonds in 2007. Aaron came into the league in 1954 with the Milwaukee Braves and finished his career with 3,771 hits and 2,297 RBIs. It was on this day, March 14, 1954, that Aaron hit his first home run in an exhibition game.

Jrue Holiday's impressive dunk over LeBron James (video)

The Sixers actually looked like they wanted to win against the Miami Heat Wednesday night. Philadelphia played hard and even held a small lead late in the fourth quarter but came up short when time expired. Jrue Holiday had 21 points, 7 assists, and 7 rebounds. Two of those points came from this dunk over King James himself.

Kaspars Daugavins must-see shootout attempt (video)

Even though the Ottawa Senators lost in a shootout against the Boston Bruins Monday night, Kaspars Daugavins attempted a crazy dangle against Boston goalie Tuukka Rask. Rask actually denied Daugavins, helping Boston seal the victory. Despite the failed attempt by Daugavins, it was still something different and exciting for hockey fans to watch.

NFL Free Agency: Day Two

After losing wide receiver Wes Welker to Denver earlier today, the Patriots have agreed in principle to a five-year deal with former Rams receiver Danny Amendola according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Amendola should fit in nicely with the Patriots offense, as he has a similar playing style to Welker.

According to ESPN and other sources, former 49ers safety Dashon Goldson has signed a five-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Goldson made the Pro Bowl in each of his last two seasons with San Francisco.

ESPN reports that the Broncos have reached a deal with former Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker. Welker was considered the best receiver on the market by many teams around the league. Many believed that Welker would return to New England, but the two sides could not agree on a deal.

Reggie Bush signed a four-year deal with the Detroit Lions. The Lions struggled last season to have a healthy and efficient running game and were targeting Bush from the start of free agency. Bush only missed one game in his last two seasons with the Miami Dolphins and rushed for 2,072 yards and 12 touchdowns. He will give quarterback Matthew Stafford a reliable option out of the backfield and help open up the passing game.

The Lions also agreed to terms with safety Glover Quin, defensive end Jason Jones, and cornerback Chris Houston. Quin was arguably one of the best safeties on the market and he, along with Jones and Houston, will improve a Lions defense that struggled for most of last season.

Former Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall agreed to a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals released running back Beanie Wells earlier this week, giving Mendenhall a chance to compete for the starting job during training camp.

Ex-Colts wide receiver Donnie Avery is planning on signing with the Chiefs. Avery will give newly acquired quarterback Alex Smith a deep-threat option and help take the attention off of Dwayne Bowe.

The Ravens continue to take hits, as they announced that they have released safety Bernard Pollard. This may have been a move to open up some cap room so that the team can sign veteran safety Ed Reed. However, Reed is testing the market and will definitely receive attention from teams around the league.

DeAndre Jordan's reaction to dunk over Brandon Knight

As if DeAndre Jordan's dunk over Brandon Knight did not provide the world with enough entrainment already, here is a picture of Jordan's face immediately after the dunk. His face is absolutely priceless.

DeAndre Jordan: the dunk heard around the world (video)

Many NBA fans are calling this dunk by DeAndre Jordan the dunk of the year. No one is quite sure why Brandon Knight of the Pistons even tried to jump and play defense. Knight was quickly embarrassed by much of the nation on social media. What is most impressive about this dunk is the fact that Jordan used his opposite hand to catch and throw the ball down. Jordan and the rest of the Clippers are definitely going to be a force in the playoffs, especially if "lob city" is in full flight.
